The Camps For Kids Mission:

Camps For Kids works to ensure that no Kansas City-area child will be turned away from summer camp because of low income or physical or developmental disability.
The organization was founded by Marjorie Powell Allen in 1981 after the Federal government discontinued a program providing summer camp to children with disabilities or financial need at no cost to their families. Camps For Kids actively seeks contributions from foundations, corporations, and individuals, which are utilized to supplement dedicated funds for camps received between April 1 and July 31 annually.

LEARN HOW YOU CAN HELP CAMPS FOR KIDS

The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges for all our network camps in 2020 and 2021. However, in 2022, we successfully organized in-person camps, serving over 2,500 children and youths. This ensured that the unique experience of summer camp remained accessible to children with disabilities and challenges we’ve been serving since 1981.

Amid the impact of COVID-19, our children and you are facing distressing circumstances on multiple fronts. The camping experience holds immense value, particularly for children that are disadvantaged and children with disabilities. Given the compounding effects of COVID-19 on schools, learning, and social/emotional development over the past few years, summer camp provides a vital opportunity for their well-being and growth.

At our camps, we recognize that learning happens continuously, and we strive to offer challenging and enriching educational opportunities for children during their summer break. By optimizing the school break, our overnight camps foster deep social-emotional wellness, recreational skills, and a diverse range of educational abilities.

The impact of Camps For Kids extends beyond the summer season. Our camps have reported that Camps For Kids funding enables them to serve more children throughout the year.

In these critical times, it is more important than ever to support organizations that make a difference for all children and families, especially those who are vulnerable. Camps For Kids plays an essential and elevated role in our community, continuing to maximize our impact on children and families.

As a result, the need for your continued support or funding is greater than ever. Ways you can help:

Testimonials

“As we expected camp has been WONDERFUL. The genuine smile on (my daughter’s) face in the pictures I took at drop off and the ones the counselors are sending me are testament to what an amazing thing you are doing. Thank you so very, very much! ”

Testimonal

“I can see what other kids have gone through and how they survived. It helps me get through & conquer. We are all survivors. That’s a gift.”

Testimonal

“When I'm at camp, I feel like a normal kid. Some kids don't get to go outside because our parents are just working too much and too hard. At home, I'm just watching movies all day. I don't want to get too old to come to Wildwood.”

Testimonal

“Without the support of Camps for Kids and the matching fund, CHD Families would be unable to provide a free medically supervised summer camp for kids with Congenital Heart Defects.”

Testimonal

“I look back on the struggle of my childhood and one of the most important and best childhood memories I have include the time spent at camp with the amazing men and women who treated me like I was normal despite my struggle”
