Mattie Rhodes Summer Art Camp

Mattie Rhodes Summer Art Camp offers creative and educational opportunities for children in the Greater Kansas City area, with a special emphasis on providing services to low-income and minority children. Children ages 5-12 spend seven hours a day for four days at MattieRhodesArtCenter exploring five art mediums (Ceramics, Fiber/Craft, Cultural Art, Mixed Media and Printmaking/Photography) with trained art instructors. The program adheres to a 10:1 instructor to student ratio with enrollment limited to 50 students per session, with 5 sessions total. Participants are provided with art materials, a camp T-shirt and healthy snacks.
The primary aim of Summer Art Camp is to provide high-quality, culturally appropriate and developmentally beneficial art activities to children. This program gives participants the opportunity to enhance their visual perception and fine motor skills, build self-confidence, improve social skills, and increase awareness and knowledge of the Hispanic culture. Children who participate in Summer Art Camp increase their general knowledge of art and their cultural awareness, as well as demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively in group settings. Cultural awareness activities are embedded throughout the session in program activities. Program participants are given the opportunity to work together in groups throughout the session. Mattie Rhodes Center tracks and measures participant satisfaction through surveys administered at each session to help ensure the quality of programming.
