The National Kidney Foundation of Kansas & Western Missouri, with medical support from Children’s Mercy Hospital and Clinics, is excited to host a fun and unique summer camp experience.
Camp ChiMer is a 5-day overnight summer camp for children ages 9 to 18 who are undergoing peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, or have had a renal transplant. Here, campers will have the chance to participate in exciting activities like fishing, team-building activities, rock wall climbing, sports, learning to cook, making lifelong friends, and yes, even swimming in our filtered pool. We also offer off-site activities such as going to a local sporting event or attending a dance party.
Camp ChiMer is located in a beautiful 100-acre privately owned facility in Kansas City, Missouri.
Camp will be staffed by physicians, nurses, dietitians, pharmacist, social workers, and volunteers 24 hours a day. Campers are medically-supervised and dialysis treatments will be provided on-site. Campers form friendships and share common bonds and experiences with others who are “just like them” all while enjoying the therapeutic benefits of the great outdoors.
Campers who have attended Camp ChiMer in the past have developed higher self-esteem, formed long lasting friendships, and have developed leadership skills. Camp ChiMer offers a self-esteem workshops where the focus is positive self-image. Leadership workshops are also provided, as well as other leadership opportunities, such as; high ropes course, scavenger hunt, and volunteer activities throughout camp. Campers learn teamwork by participating in various team building exercises and independence by having campers take care of their own personal hygiene.
Most importantly, Camp ChiMer allows campers to feel just like everyone else. Chronic Kidney Disease in children is very rare. When campers come to camp and see other kids with their same medical condition, they can be themselves. Campers can get to know other kids who are just like them. In addition, campers who are on Hemo-dialysis during camp can still experience regular camp activities, such as swimming, boating, and playing in any water related activity.
Counselors and volunteers have learned to create a safe environment for campers. Campers can be themselves while at camp and try things they have never done in the past. Camp ChiMer has been able to provide those first-time opportunities for campers such as; archery, rock wall climbing, and even horse back riding.
Camp ChiMer is truly a unique experience where our campers can be themselves and form friendships for a lifetime.
“I had an amazing time at camp I met so many great people and had the time of my life I never wanted it to end!”- Chase
